“The Link Together Initiatives” Attracts Over 140 Applications from NGOs

Dedicated to Taking Care of the Ancient Banyan Tree in Choi Wan Estate

There is a giant, ancient tree at the entrance of Choi Wan Commercial Complex. The banyan tree has been maintained since the construction of Choi Wan Estate and has survived for more than 40 years. As time has gone by, numerous smaller trunks have grown around the banyan tree, making it difficult to locate the position of the main trunk. Although there is an absence of accurate information about the actual age of this tree, it is roughly estimated to be around 60 to 80 years old.

Special Care for the Well-being of the Ancient Tree
Standing upright at the entrance of Choi Wan Commercial Complex, the banyan tree is one of 479 trees listed in the Register of Old and Valuable Trees in Hong Kong. Over 5,840 trees have been planted at properties in The Link’s portfolio, with a total gardening area of nearly 88,800 square metres. As such, The Link specially formed the Slope and Tree Management Team to take good care of every tree. However, since the banyan tree is the only registered ancient tree under The Link’s management, it is imperative for us to provide extra protection and care to this tree.

Chan Kin-ming, Maintenance Manager of The Link, said that the main task of the team is to find enough space for the ancient tree to grow healthily; therefore, the iron fence and giant stones were removed. To specially take care of the ancient tree, the team also hired experts to conduct micro-drilling and sonar detection to carefully probe into the
anches and trunks to see if they had become hollow, as well as to monitor their health.

The Slope and Tree Management Team conducts on-site inspection of The Link’s over 5,000 trees two days a week, with each tree checked approximately once every two years. Chan Kin-ming closely monitors and fully understands the ancient banyan tree’s condition. “Whenever I come to visit this tree, I can spot the differences and know new leaves are growing,” he said. With limited land supply, it is difficult for trees to grow healthily in urban district, and even rare to be listed as Old and Valuable Tree.
How to to Become an Arborist?

The Link’s Slope and Tree Management Team has a certified arborist who helps to take care of the almost 6,000 trees which have been planted on properties in The Link’s portfolio. Certified arborists understand the structure of trees, health conditions, soil analysis, nutrient composition, viruses and pests, the various tree species, and work safety. For those who are interested in becoming a certified arborist, you should have a minimum of three years of relevant work experience, obtain relevant qualifications, and pass professional qualification exams.

Most commercial organisations and government departments accept and admit arborists licenced by the International Society of Arboriculture. While preparing for the licencing examination, candidates should obtain related working experience and academic knowledge. There are around 150 million trees in Hong Kong under the management of the government, and the local arborist industry is in its initial development stage. There is a high demand for talent, and the prospect of the industry looks promising.

Stanley Plaza Collects 46,000 Glass Bottles as Part of the Southside Glass Recycling Initiative

The Link Upgraded the Hong Kong Green Building Council Membership
