Going All Out to Help the Needy and Reduce Landfill
Waste through Food Recycling

Through its vast network of fresh market tenants and food donation partners, Link actively contributes to resource management in Hong Kong. Over four tonnes of edible and non-edible food materials are collected every day at its markets and shopping centres, alleviating the burden on landfills while providing food for the needy. A close look at Link's food waste reduction efforts sheds light on how a high social and environmental impact can be attained through strong partnerships and commitment.

Given that more than 60% of its retailers are in food-related trades, including fresh food vendors at its 53 fresh markets, Link is uniquely placed to contribute to food recycling in Hong Kong. With financial and logistical support through Link Together Initiatives, Link enables its NGO partner Food Angel to collect on average 1.7 tonnes of surplus food daily at 36 fresh markets, which is turned into hot meals and food packs for people in need. The NGO’s ongoing three-year surplus food collection programme aims to save 625 tonnes of food each year to benefit 1.9 million underprivileged people. In addition to Food Angel, four other NGOs are collecting surplus food from tenants at selected Link markets to help people in need.

Link’s food donation drive extends well beyond fresh markets. By sponsoring delivery trucks and allowing food collection boxes operated by Food Angel and St. James' Settlement to be placed at its shopping centres, Link facilitated the collection of 190 tonnes of raw and packaged food at its properties and other locations for distribution to those most in need last year.

Further demonstrating Link’s commitment to food recycling, 2.5 tonnes of food waste collected from tenants at 19 Link fresh markets are delivered daily to the Hong Kong government’s Organic Resources Recovery Centre Phase 1 (O.PARK1) for conversion into useful products and energy. To enable the smooth running of this green initiative, training on food waste separation and collection was provided to Link fresh market tenants and frontline staff.

Food recycling is a key part of Link’s sustainable strategy to manage resources and to benefit the community. As Link’s experience shows, a sharp focus on food recycling, complemented by strong partnerships with tenants, NGOs and the community, can go a long way towards promoting a circular economy, diverting waste from landfills and helping the underprivileged.

A delegation from Link, led by CEO George Hongchoy, participated in the 10th International Public Markets Conference hosted by the Mayor of London and Project for Public Spaces, sharing Link’s professional experience and insights in fresh market management. Focusing on how markets can enhance their ability to support local people, drive prosperity and improve the local communities in which they are based, the conference theme closely echoes the sustainability efforts of Link’s fresh markets.

Leading the Way in
Sustainability

Corporate sustainability is about how business flourishes together with the community by drawing on and developing interlinked dependencies and networks, as well as anticipating and adapting to emerging challenges to ensure long-term business resilience.

Sustainability is embedded in Link’s strategy-setting. Highlighting Link’s commitment to sustainability at the board level, Chairman Nicholas Allen chairs the company’s Sustainability Advisory Committee, which brings external perspectives to Link’s broad spectrum of sustainability efforts through its diverse membership, including experts and professionals from academia, NGOs, tenants and the business community. The committee has played a key role in shaping corporate decision-making to ensure Link manages its business using a balanced approach that creates value for all stakeholder groups.

Turning sustainability ideas into actions requires the commitment of both internal and external stakeholders. The team led by Calvin Lee Kwan, General Manager - Corporate Development & Strategy, assists in setting strategy and priorities, secures staff alignment with these objectives, and coordinates internal and external efforts to achieve sustainability goals.

To maximise its impact, Link leverages its resources and strengths in supporting a wide range of community engagement initiatives, from reducing properties’ energy use to sponsoring community projects and building a more inclusive community.

By steering United Nations environmental programmes and leading the global real estate sector in green finance, Link contributes to and acts as a strong advocate for the development of sustainability practices internationally, bringing its efforts beyond the cities where it operates.

For its achievements in sustainable development, Link has been recognised internationally through its inclusion in the FTSE4Good Index Series and the Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index.
