Encouraging children to design their own toys and come up with their own play ideas using everyday items like bamboo tubes, wooden boards, plastic bottles and cloth is the essence of the "Playborhood" project. For three consecutive years, the project has received funding from Link Together Initiatives, Link’s flagship charity and community engagement programme, to organise playgrounds in local communities, creating memorable moments for children and also raising public awareness of the "Playborhood" concept. Project organiser Playright has assisted a youth service agency in offering similar child-directed playgrounds in Tin Shui Wai district, and is exploring collaborations with schools and government departments to extend the service to more communities.
Promoting Cantonese Opera Artistry
through the Generations
Cantonese opera is not only a traditional cultural treasure, but also a bridge linking three generations. "Cha Duk Chang in 3 Generations", a Link Together Initiatives-sponsored project, offers workshops in Cantonese opera for children and seniors, as well as events where both groups perform together. As the songs taught in the classes are written for children, with themes reflective of their daily lives, they easily resonate with the younger participants. On the other hand, the elderly participants find these children's songs to be a new challenge, which motivates them to work hard to master them. With sons and daughters coming to cheer for their elderly parents, each performance has turned into a joyful get-together of three generations against a backdrop of celebrating Cantonese opera artistry.
Help the Aged and Teach the Young
by Making Meals from Surplus Food
With support from Link Together Initiatives, "Help the Aged, Teach the Young" seeks to reduce food waste by distributing hot meals made with surplus food from Link’s fresh markets to people in need. Since the meal boxes offer a healthy combination of less meat and more vegetables, an elderly beneficiary suffering from high blood pressure said her blood pressure has fallen after consuming the meal box regularly. The project also arranges site visits to its community kitchen for students to educate them on saving food. Refrigerator trucks purchased with funds from Link Together Initiatives has greatly extended the range of reusable foods and enhanced the efficiency of food collection.
In a bid to give more young people the chance to pursue their dreams, for 2016/17, Link has increased the number of places for its “First Generation University Student Scholarship” programme from 100 to 130, and it has increased the total scholarship funding from HK$2.0 million to HK$2.6 million. Charlie, a scholarship recipient and a first-year student of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology who aspires to work in the aviation industry, said Link’s financial support has allowed him to focus on realising his goals. Thanks to Link’s scholarship, during his freshman year, he was able to join his older peers in a remote control plane design competition held in the U.S., which gave him the invaluable opportunity to study plane designs and learn from them.

Shopping Malls Turn into
Concert Venues with
Free-to-Play Pianos
To bring music to the community, Link has joined hands with the Hong Kong Art and Culture Anywhere Foundation Association to launch the “Piano In Mall” project at six of Link’s shopping centres, which provides colourfully painted pianos for visitors to play freely inside each mall. While spontaneous crowd-drawing piano performances are occasionally delivered, the project also presented four concerts at Lok Fu Place and Sheung Tak Plaza featuring young performers playing diverse music genres using the in-mall pianos.
Killiney, a restaurant tenant at H.A.N.D.S, collaborated with local charity Cloud Rainbow Action to collect used school bags for disadvantaged students in a mountainous region in Mainland China. Link gave its full support to this worthwhile cause by placing collection boxes at H.A.N.D.S and Kwong Yuen Shopping Centre, marking a heart-warming beginning to the new school year.
Michael Lai of Link’s Sustainability
Advisory Committee
Keeps Close Tab on Social Pulse
A leader in Hong Kong's welfare sector, Michael Lai has a distinguished record in public service, having served for many years with the Government's Central Policy Unit and Council for Sustainable Development. After retiring from the CEO role at St. James' Settlement, where he worked for more than 20 years, he has remained as its consultant, and he has also joined the World Green Organisation as its Chairman and become a member of Link’s Sustainability Advisory Committee (SAC), with a view to using his knowledge and experience to continue making contributions to sustainable development.
During his years at the helm of St. James' Settlement, he spearheaded a number of service projects that responded to the urgent social needs of the time, including re-launching the People's Food Bank to help ease the plight of those in dire financial difficulties following the SARS epidemic, and setting up a new service centre in Tin Shui Wai to assist new immigrants to become self-reliant and integrate into the local community.
Michael noted that while Link is not a welfare organisation, as a corporate citizen, it can make use of its strengths and resources to contribute to community in many ways. "By enhancing its tenant mix, it can better serve the daily needs of the underprivileged groups," he said. "Since many NGOs have a strong understanding of social needs, and since many social enterprises run successful operations, Link should explore more cooperation with them, which will not only create more job opportunities, but also support worthwhile social causes."
Michael's previous work with an urban renewal project in Central & Western District has instilled in him a strong appreciation of the need to engage different stakeholders early when rolling out new initiatives. "Link and many other private sector players have realised the importance of community engagement and are willing to listen to stakeholders' feedback on their business operations, which helps them provide services that meet public expectations."
As a member of Link’s SAC, he looks forward to further raising the social impact of Link’s work by offering his ideas in a number of areas, including environmental protection, social services, conservation of cultural heritage, as well as support for young people.
Through a wide range of initiatives, Link actively embraces sustainable development, which benefits various stakeholder groups in the community. We recently launched a multiplatform ad campaign on how we create value for the community through our various sustainability initiatives, which include facilities enhancement, scholarships, surplus food collection and distribution, and support for guide dog breeding and training. These initiatives highlight Link’s brand message of “We Link People to a Brighter Future”.
Trusty Congee King, a premium congee restaurant recommended by Michelin for the sixth consecutive year, has opened a new branch at Link’s Temple Mall. According to Bosco Ho, Director and General Manager of Tai Hing Operations, the restaurant chain aims to fill the market niche for high-quality congee and noodle products, and to promote the long-standing tradition of Cantonese congee.
Featuring such signature dishes as Pork Liver & Scallop Congee, the restaurant's savoury rice porridge is made with high-quality freshwater fish. To ensure freshness in its dishes, food ingredients are delivered to each branch twice a day. Strict production standards are enforced, and incentives like bonuses and training are offered to motivate staff and enhance their performance.
Among the primary customer base of the Temple Mall location of Trusty Congee King are families and tourists. Adjacent to Wong Tai Sin Temple and situated at the centre of Kowloon and New Territories, Temple Mall's strategic location and strong tenant mix of popular brands have helped draw target customers to the restaurant, said Bosco. The Temple Mall branch has achieved satisfactory sales performance since its opening, and it has also partnered with the shopping centre to launch promotions to appeal to local customers.
Fish Stall Tenant Casts Wider Net
Offering products from its own fish farm in Sheung Shui, Tat Kong fish stall specialises in a wide range of popular fish species. Having set up retail stalls in Tin Shing Fresh Market, Choi Wan Fresh Market and Lung Hang Fresh Market, shop owner Gilbert Au Yeung aims to build a reputation for quality products and service.
Having its own fish farm and truck fleet has enabled Tat Kong to control costs effectively and keep prices competitive. Gilbert points out that Tat Kong's first stall in Link’s portfolio opened in the newly renovated Tin Shing Market, as he believes that quality service and a hygienic environment are the way forward for the fresh market industry.
As Tat Kong became more popular and opened new stalls in Choi Wan Market and Lung Hang Market, Gilbert was initially worried about his ability to manage multiple stalls at the same time. This change turned out to be a blessing and a smart business decision, as his staff members have become better problem solvers by gaining the chance to working independently, and the two markets are seeing better shopper traffic than he had expected. He plans to further enhance his stall network by raising the quality of food processing and improving operational systems.
