Link’s increasingly diversified portfolio calls for a robust development plan to recruit and groom management talent. Launched in 2010, Link’s Management Trainee Programme has played a key role in hiring promising university graduates and unlocking their potential to develop them into future business leaders. The programme’s main key feature is its flexibility. During the two-year job rotation period, the management trainees (MTs) are placed in business departments customised to their interests and career aspirations, enabling them to develop an in-depth understanding of Link’s business. MTs are also able to acquire wider skills and experience through various challenging action learning projects, including leading large-scale staff and company initiatives.

The programme’s selection process assesses whether a candidate has the requisite skills and qualities with reference to eight core competencies, including teamwork and collaboration, communication and impact, as well as problem analysis and execution, which were developed based on Link’s Competency Framework.

The Summer Trainee Programme is also available at Link each year to familiarise university students with business operations and life in the workplace. Trainees who joined the programme last summer even got the chance take part in a company orientation briefing, a workshop on presentation skills and a sharing session with the CEO. The programme gives prospective MT candidates a head start by offering them a close look at Link’s business.

Sharing from Trainees

"My goal is to further develop my career in property management. As an MT, I was placed in the Leasing and Projects and Development Departments, which enabled me to understand their needs, and facilitated my work later at the Property Management & Operations Department after graduating from the programme. My current work at Lok Fu Place has equipped me with valuable skills in daily operations, financial management and tenant services of a major shopping mall. I would advise new MTs to be humble, and take the initiative to acquire new experiences and expand their horizons, so as to make the most of the opportunities provided by the company and improve their own professional standards."

"Serving as a summer trainee for the past two years, I have gained valuable hands-on experience at Link’s Learning and Development Department, including conducting customer service workshops, which gave me the chance to closely interact with frontline staff and gain new business insights. As a sign of Link’s strong team culture, colleagues are very willing to help newcomers and provide them with challenging opportunities, which has heightened my interest in applying for the MT Programme in my final year at University."

Staff Workshop Sheds Light on Interpersonal Relationships

Knowing the traits of different personality types and their frames of mind can go a long way towards understanding how people think and enhancing interpersonal relationships. About 100 staff members joined a recent staff workshop titled “Enneagram x Interpersonal Relationships” to learn more about the Enneagram, a popular model for understanding personality types, as well as ways to identify one’s personality and how to interact with people of different types.

One participant said that the workshop has enabled her to work more collaboratively with others by helping her better understand what drives people to behave and see things the way they do. It has also helped participants reach beyond their limits by showing the strengths of different personality types, and how they can complement and learn from each other.

Link’s newly enhanced markets have introduced kid-sized shopping trolleys in addition to the usual type for adults. By allowing kids to help their parents shop for fresh produce, this new addition promises to turn trips to the market into a fun affair for the family. It also supports the long-term development of the fresh market by enabling young children, who will one day comprise a new generation of customers, to learn more about various types of fresh food and get accustomed to shopping at fresh markets.

Since its launch seven years ago, Link’s Management Trainee (MT) Programme has played a key role in grooming future business leaders by offering a two-year training period followed by placement in a business department of the trainee’s choice to further their professional growth. Like new fresh market services catering to the next generation of customers, this talent development programme is a forward-looking initiative that helps prepare the company for the future.

Thanks to the MT Programme’s flexible design, and the company’s support, the MTs are fast becoming capable, independent professionals in various fields. Not only are they able to choose postings matching their interests and career goals during the training period, but they are also provided with educational sponsorship as well as various opportunities that help enhance their organisational skills and self-confidence.

To become an MT, one needs to stand out from among 1,000 applicants each year by demonstrating superior talent and potential. The application period for the upcoming MT Programme starts in November. If you are a final-year university student interested in developing a career in the REIT sector and commercial properties, please do not miss the career talks that will held at various universities later this year.
