Greater Influence
through Charity Initiatives

To deepen its reach into the community, Link's flagship charity project, the "Link Together Initiatives" programme, will donate HK$10 million in the upcoming funding year through new funding categories.

Meeting Local Needs

Entering its third year, the programme is sponsoring small local projects organised by charity organisations to better cater to the needs of local communities, under the newly created Neighbourhood Project funding category. Ranging from the promotion of mutual help and health education, to life planning for the youth, 37 projects were recommended by a selection panel comprising representatives of the District Councils and District Offices, and will jointly receive HK$3.4 million in total funding.

"Link's First Generation University Student Scholarship", another new funding category, aims to cultivate future leaders by granting scholarships to 100 youngsters who are first-generation university students in their families and who have demonstrated exemplary commitment to school and community activities. Apart from providing a total of HK$2 million in scholarships, Link will give priority to these students when recruiting summer interns and management trainees.

Guide to Safety

For the visually impaired, guide dogs serve as their eyes. To enhance public awareness of the issues of visual impairment and the role of guide dogs, Link Together Initiatives project "Love Leads the Way" hosted a public education event at Lok Fu Plaza, where guide dog users shared their experiences with the public.

Link's support has also enabled the introduction and training of eight puppies to become part of this service for local users. The puppies joined the media event organised by Link so that the public can better understand of their selection and socialisation training. Link's staff members also came up with easy-to-remember names for the dogs.

Served by his guide dog Deanna, Tsang Kin-ping, vice chairman of project organiser Hong Kong Guide Dogs Association, said that Deanna helps him get around obstacles that are hanging above ground, which he is unable to do easily using his walking stick. Deanna also gives him companionship and broadens his social circle, as well as offering spiritual comfort.

In the coming year, Link will renew its donation to the service to support the breeding of guide dog puppies in Hong Kong. In addition to investing to enhance barrier-free access facilities, Link has been contributing to a more inclusive community by welcoming guide dogs to all its shopping centres.

The four puppies (from left) – Faith, Freda, Ginny and Gaga – got their names from the staff naming contest.

A Great Fresh Market Story to Tell

"Journalism requires quick response, initiative and strong persuasive skills. Through this contest, I was able to try my hand at news reporting, brush up my presentation skills, and acquire useful techniques in video production, which has greatly enhanced my interest in journalism."
Christy,
A winner at Link's Fresh Market Modernity Video Competition

Christy is among the 30 high-school students who joined the competition, which was developed to equip students with reporting skills through a real-life project at the new-generation fresh markets. In addition to learning from Dr. Masato Kajimoto of The University of Hong Kong's Journalism & Media Studies Centre useful practical tips on conducting interviews and shooting video from smart phone, contestants put those skills to use during interviews with Link's management team and retailers at the modernised Lok Fu Market. From fresh produce and meat to fine wine, and from groceries to delectable snacks, Lok Fu Market offers shoppers a wide range of choices.

The participants competed as teams of two by making a short news feature video and presenting the story concept and project experience to the judging panel. The winning teams won HK$12,000 in cash coupons for electronic items.

Link REIT included in
Hang Seng Corporate
Sustainability Index

Following the latest round of index reviews by Hang Seng Indexes Company Limited, Link has been included in the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index ("HSCSI") since mid-September 2015. This is the latest addition to Link REIT's sustainability-related index memberships, which already include FTSE4Good Index and Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index.

"Over the years, we have laid a strong foundation for running our business in a sustainable manner and for creating value for the community as a whole. Our inclusion in HSCSI and other industry-renowned sustainability indexes underscores our success in embedding corporate sustainability into our strategy and operations, and recognises the progress we have made in advancing our mission of improving the lives of those around us."

CEO George Hongchoy

With international investors increasingly focusing on corporate sustainability, encompassing environmental, social and corporate governance, HSCSI is a popular benchmark for index funds that adopt a corporate sustainability theme. Constituent selection is based on a robust process, including consideration of the results from a sustainability assessment undertaken by Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency, to ensure that the index is objective, reliable and of high investability.

Link Showcases Hong Kong's
First Office Hydroponic Walls

Link has recently converted the two green walls in its Kwun Tong office into vertical hydroponic gardening systems, making Link Hong Kong's first company to grow hydroponic vegetables in an office. Each harvest will yield about 250 sets of vegetables. Among the options being considered for distributing the produce are auctioning the vegetables to staff and donating the proceeds to charities or, giving them to those staff with the highest volunteer service hours. Aside from enhancing the indoor environment, the new walls offer fresh edible vegetables and promote team cohesion.

To enhance aesthetic value of the new facility, Romaine and Four Seasons lettuce plants were picked as the primary crops. Temperature and light are optimised by a computerised system. Running purified water containing a nutrient solution ensures that the plants grow in a pollution-free environment. The vegetables are for ready for consumption upon harvest with no need for washing.

In view of the limited space of Hong Kong's offices, project partner The New Green has developed ultra-thin cabinet for the hydroponic plants, with depth of only 28 cm.

"By introducing the hydroponic walls to the office, which feature energy-efficient lighting and a water recycling system, we are promoting green living and a vegetable-rich diet among staff, while advancing our environmental sustainability."

Helping Tenants Save Energy

Energy-saving measures are good for the environment and for business. As an active advocate for environmental sustainability, Link launched the Tenant Energy-saving Programme to assist tenants in reducing their electricity use. The programme offers guidance when upgrading facilities and improving operational practices as well as analysing their electricity use. In addition to reducing electricity consumption, the programme aims to help tenants cut down on their utility expenses.

Link has earlier organised a seminar on energy management for tenants at Tin Shui Shopping Centre, inviting representatives from Link, CLP and Friends of the Earth to talk about green technologies and electricity-saving tips.

Dr Calvin Lee Kwan, General Manager of Sustainability, said, "Many of our tenants are small retailers, lacking the resources to study energy saving measures. To increase the impact of our environmental management efforts and promote green living, we are engaging tenants through this programme to save energy at our properties by transferring knowledge and sharing our experiences with them."

Shopping with Peace of Mind

Live chicken is a popular food ingredient for making scrumptious dishes, especially during festival time. In view of the strong demand from customers, Link has introduced at Lok Fu Market the first live poultry stall that separates the customer from live poultry to ensure safe and hygienic conditions while preserving the local shopping culture for fresh food.

As new stall licences are no longer issued by government, Link invited a tenant from the Tai Yuen Market to set up and operate this new poultry stall at Lok Fu Market. It is equipped with sealed glass panels to allow customers to inspect and pick their purchase while minimising the infection risks stemming from direct contact with live poultry. An independent ventilation system channels air inside the stall to an exhaust outlet outside the market as a further safety precaution. Since opening in May, the stall has been highly popular amongst shoppers.

Creating Value for
Fresh Market
Tenants

Link's fresh markets, a key component of our asset portfolio, enhance the shopping experience through creative design and innovative services. To support tenant business operations, Link's fresh market asset management team strengthens communication channels and helps tenants to stay on top of market trends.

Julie Ng, General Manager of this specialised department, said that the team is sharing with stall tenants useful information on areas such as product display, e-money application, and waste-reducing storage solutions to add value to their business. The team offers exposure in various professional areas, including leasing, property management, marketing, finance, asset planning and communications. A strong sense of mission also comes with the work of turning around Hong Kong's fresh market sector. To cope with the growing number of markets that will come under its management, the team is expanding to provide career opportunities to those who are interested in gaining broad exposure, taking on new challenges and honing their interpersonal skills.
