Site Visits to Barrier-Free Access Facilities

The Link meets with the Access Advisory Group, comprising representatives from 11 rehabilitation organisations, to discuss the latest developments on barrier-free access (BFA) facilities and services. Seven meetings were held since 2011.

The new Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Dr York Chow Yat-ngok, visited Tsz Wan Shan Shopping Centre and Fung Tak Shopping Centre in mid-July to see firsthand the progress of and difficulties in improving BFA facilities in our properties. Dr Chow appreciates The Link’s efforts in carrying out the BFA facilities upgrade projects and providing relevant training to its staff. He commands the company’s idea of setting up a BFA experience centre. He would cooperate closely with The Link in the future to promote inclusiveness in the community.

Herman Hui Chung-shing, Chairman of the Rehabilitation Advisory Committee, Stephen Sui, Commissioner for Rehabilitation of the Labour and Welfare Bureau, and several groups representing the visually impaired were invited to try the first “E-Guide” system, of which a trial run was conducted by the University of Hong Kong in Wong Tai Sin Plaza, to experience the convenience it brings to people with visual impairment.

Guide Dogs Welcomed at All The Link’s Shopping Centres

Tsang Kin-ping, Vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Guide Dogs Association, expressed his gratitude to The Link for the support towards the development of guide dogs in Hong Kong.

To provide further support to the physically challenged, The Link announced that people with visual impairment are welcome to bring their guide dogs to all shopping centres of The Link. The Link is delighted to have the Hong Kong Guide Dogs Association to teach its frontline staff members how to treat guide dogs properly. Nearly 200 staff members have received relevant training.

In the future, The Link will provide Hong Kong’s first guide dog training ground network by turning its shopping centres into training grounds for guide dogs newly arrived in Hong Kong as well as puppies trained locally, so that the guide dogs will be able to adapt to the local living environment. For example, they will learn how to use escalators and lifts, how to go shopping with their masters and how to guide their masters through crowded areas, helping the visually impaired engage themselves in the community.

Promotes a Green Lifestyle

The Link has partnered with Commercial Radio for the first time to launch the “30-Hour Low Carbon Campaign”. Over the course of a 30-hour time period on 17 and 18 August, members of the public are invited to form 30 “Low Carbon Teams” and complete a series of low carbon missions such as collecting recycled materials, organic planting and generating electricity by riding a bicycle in shopping centres of The Link. This campaign aims to offer unique low-carbon activities to encourage the public to adopt greener habits.

George Hongchoy, CEO of The Link, said that The Link has been highly committed to implementing energy-saving and low-carbon measures in daily operations ever since its listing. In an attempt to minimise the company’s environmental impact, The Link announced its 20/20 Vision, which sets a target of achieving a 20% reduction in annual energy consumption by 2020 using 2010 as a reference.

Additionally, The Link provided support to the inaugural Hong Kong Green Day, an event organised by the Green Council to increase public awareness of environmental responsibility and protection. Not only did The Link provide the venue for the event’s launching ceremony at Lok Fu Plaza on 5 June, but it also invited tenants to become “Green Shops” by encouraging them to offer discounts to customers wearing green and to refrain from giving out plastic shopping bags. Staff members of The Link were encouraged to dress in green to show their support on this meaningful day.
