Experience Japan's Low Carbon Culture and Spread Green Messages

The four winning teams were awarded with a six-day free trip to visit green tourist spots and experience innovative low carbon concepts in Japan. Winners also became "Low Carbon Bloggers" to spread low carbon messages to the public.

What is Low Carbon Lifestyle?

The urbanised lifestyle in Hong Kong has emitted a large amount of carbon dioxide. To alleviate global warming, we should adopt low carbon lifestyle to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Low carbon lifestyle can easily be implemented by recycling used clothes, consuming organic vegetables, saving energy and using public transport. The Link has taken the lead to apply low carbon management approach with the aim of encouraging low carbon living to the public.

As part of The Link's ongoing efforts to link sustainability with everything we do, we are pleased to announce the launch of The Link sustainability e-learning platform. It is designed:

To simplify confusing sustainability jargon into terms and concepts for everyone to understand

To help participants recognise that sustainability is relevant and applicable both at home and at work

The Link Launches
Sustainability E-learning Platform

Nicholas Sallnow-Smith, Chairman of The Link, commented on the implementation of our e-learning platform: "One of the challenges we are facing in implementing sustainability strategies is to find ways to allow employees to participate in our sustainability efforts and to ensure that they understand our values and goals so we can sustain our development strategy going forward." Through the e-learning platform, we hope to align the understanding of our staff so they realise that sustainability is an important part of our everyday lives, whether at home or in the work environment.

CEO George Hongchoy also offered his thoughts: "Sustainability extends beyond changing light bulbs, reducing water and electricity consumption and minimising waste. It is about how we run our business and create value for our different stakeholders to ensure the viability of The Link REIT for the next 20, 50, 100 years and beyond." The Link Sustainability Framework identifies the elements that are critical to ensuring The Link's long-term success and provides our staff with the foundation for developing comprehensive and viable solutions to the various challenges we face in our business operations.

To date, The Link sustainability e-learning platform has released the first chapter, with three additional chapters scheduled for release in the near future. Completing the four chapters will be mandatory for all staff. The e-learning platform aims to evolve into a dynamic learning environment, consisting of videos, interviews and slideshows. Dr Calvin Kwan, General Manager – Sustainability, believes that "the success of the platform will rely on the input of staff providing ideas to include in the e-learning platform such as new sustainability stories, training programmes for implementing The Link Sustainability Framework and general best practice ideas that can be implemented at home or in the workplace."

Initially, the e-learning platform will be available only to The Link staff, but future revisions will be made available to include contractor staff as we improve and develop our engagement with service providers and contractors.

New Ideas on Rejuvenating Fresh Markets

Many young people prefer to shop in supermarkets as they are not used to the environment of traditional wet markets. To make a breakthrough, The Link recently invited graduating interior design students from the Hong Kong Design Institute to create fresh market stall designs. In addition to learning about fresh market culture, the students offered new ideas for upcoming fresh market enhancement projects.

A number of winning stall designs will be adopted in future markets of The Link. The Link is keeping up its efforts to rejuvenate Hong Kong's fresh market culture, with a view to attracting more people, especially young customers, to shop at markets and creating a better business environment for stall tenants.
